Professor Abdelrahim H. A. Hassan, previously holding the position of Food Science and Technology professor and Director of the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Center at Beni-Suef University, transitioned to Nile University in 2023 as a professor and Director of the Quality Assurance Unit at the School of Biotechnology. His academic journey commenced with a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from Cairo University in 2004, followed by successive attainment of Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Food Safety and Microbiology in 2008 and 2011, respectively.
During his postdoctoral tenure in Spain, Professor Abdelrahim was affiliated with the Biosensors and Bioelectronics group at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) and the Food Science Department at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) from 2012 to 2013. He later returned to ICN2 as a postdoctoral researcher from 2016 to 2018. His research during this period focused on advancing gold nanoparticles-based biosensors and paper-based lateral flow immunoassays for the detection of pathogenic microorganisms in food and water. Notably, he contributed to various research projects funded by the European Commission and the Spanish government.
In 2018, during a sabbatical, Professor Hassan served as a visiting professor in the Department of Food Science at Pennsylvania State University. Collaborating with faculty and researchers, he pioneered the development of a pioneering composite antimicrobial film utilizing biodegradable pullulan to combat foodborne pathogens. This innovative work garnered recognition from both the scientific community and industry, resulting in a patent granted by the United States Patents and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Professor Hassan currently leads the INTACTBioPack research project, a substantial endeavor funded by the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA). This collaboration involves 11 partners from 8 Mediterranean countries, with a focus on developing intelligent and active microbiome-based biodegradable packaging for Mediterranean food.
With over 40 publications in esteemed international journals, Professor Hassan is a distinguished scientific peer-reviewer for more than 20 international journals across various domains including food science and technology, biosensors, microbiology, and biotechnology. Furthermore, he has served as a reviewer in the scientific committee for the promotion of professors and associate professors of the Supreme Council of Egyptian Universities since 2022.
Professor Abdelrahim is also an Ad hoc peer reviewer at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), USA, since 2020. He holds a Lifetime membership in the Honor Society of Agriculture Scientists (Gamma Sigma Delta), USA, and is a Certified ServSafe Food Safety Instructor and exam proctor accredited by the American National Restaurant Association, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Moreover, he serves as an Expert and External Auditor of Quality Assurance and Accreditation at the National Authority of Quality Assurance and Accreditation for Education (NAQAAE, Egypt). Additionally, Professor Abdelrahim has developed a professional diploma in food safety management at Nile University, aimed at equipping graduates with essential knowledge and competencies necessary for success in the food industry and food service sectors.
